Tours and Excursions
Walking Tour:
Grangegorman East
2pm on Wednesday 22nd June
€20 (pay during registration)
Along this walk you will encounter the very edges of Medieval Dublin. Smithfield, a former hay, cattle, sheep and horse market now repurposed for the 21st century; Jameson Distillery & Visitor Centre, one of the oldest in the land (although Irish whiskey is only aged here now and distilled in Co. Cork), St Michan’s, the oldest parish church on the Northside (founded by the Vikings) and also the repository of 600 mummified corpses – a strange story in itself) and the Four Courts, an impressive classical building, seat of the High and the Supreme Courts. This was also where the Irish Civil War started in 1922. Along the way you will see many other sights and a panorama of the River LIffey and the distant Christ Church Cathedral. The return journey will pass the King’s Inns – operating a barrister school since the 1600s – and then past Broadstone Railway station, more reminiscent of an ancient Egyptian temple.
Walking Tour:
Grangegorman West
2pm on Wednesday 22nd June
€20 (pay during registration)
This route will take you towards a road first laid down as a military highway over 2,000 years ago, Stoneybatter. From there you will cut across 19th century workers housing estates until you encounter one of the most sacred burial spots in Ireland: the last resting place of executed rebels of the famous 1916 Rising, Arbour Hill. This is in the area of a once vast military complex formerly known as the Royal Barracks which was, in effect, the world’s first military barracks. Today it is called Collins’ Barracks and is now the seat of many wonderful national museum collections. In front of the Barracks is an 18th century burial pit where rebels from the 1798 Revolution were buried after execution. Across the river you will see the Guinness Brewery complex.. For the return journey, you will pass an interesting modern bridge named after Irish author James Joyce, before wheeling around to return to Grangegorman. You will pass a former 18th century school now a headquarters for the legal profession. The tour will skirt an ancient marketing square before entering narrow streets to bring us back to Grangegorman.
